Academic Engravings from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts: Male Nudes (1880-1914)

While I was doing research on Arthur Mayeur (1871-1934)(Prior Posting) I ran across a website

which was loaded with academic nudes. I was interested in the works of Mayeur (included in the prior post and below) but was amazed at the fine details in all of the works of students in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. They date from the 1880 to 1914 time period. Each in its own is a masterpiece example of 19th century technique. You have to remind yourself that these are not graphite on paper works but are in fact intaglio prints (engravings). Simply amazing.

Arthur Mayeur (1871-1934): Grand Prix de Rome - Prints - 1896 - Standing Male Nude - Intaglio Print

A few moments ago I took another beautiful academic work at auction, this time something very special. It is an intaglio print of a standing male nude by the French artist Arthur Mayeur (1871-1934). The inscription at the bottom of the print indicates Mayeur took the 1896 Grand Prix de Rome  in the Line-Engraving (Taille Douce = Copper plate engraving) division with this particular image. The detail is amazing. I will send it out to the paper conservation people and have that foxing from an acid backing removed.

Arthur Mayeur began his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lille under the instruction of Alphonse Leroy (1888 to 1892) and later in the Parisian workshop of Jules Jacquet (1892 to 1896). He contributed to the Gazette des Beaux-Arts (1901-1910) and the Journal of Ancient and Modern Art (1904-1910). He was a member of the Historic Monuments Commission. He regularly won medals at the Annual Salon of French Artists. He became a Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur in 1909. He is best known for his etchings, dry points, and watercolors.

Addendum: The Print arrived today (11/8/2013) and after I opened the package I discovered that the print had been affixed to the matt with freaking masking tape! Good Grief! It took me the better part of an hour to get that nasty mess off the back of the paper without destroying the darn thing. Thankfully, the paper is a very good quality linen rag paper (the kind they make dollar bills out of) and is little worse for wear. Whatever possessed someone to use that crap tape to mount a beautiful print like this is beyond me. Pure unadulterated stupidity I would wager.

Title: Standing Male Nude
Artist: Arthur Mayeur (1871-1934)
Material: Intaglio Print on Paper
Dated: 1896
Here are a few examples of his other works:

Auguste Wugs (?): Standing Nude Boy - Circa 1900

This nice drawing of a nude boy by Auguste Wugs (?) sold yesterday on one of the European eBay sites. Needless to say the bidding hit the roof. Unfortunately, I could find no biographic information on the artist but the description indicated it had been in the possession of Studio Lavielle at one time. It is executed on thin paper and shows the precision of a 19th century Academy trained hand and eye.

Eduard Veith ( 1856 - 1925): Pencil Study of a Nude Boy - Circa 1880

This Eduard Veith pencil drawing popped up on eBay Austria this morning and I bought it for my collection. It was most probably a preliminary study for a mural. Eduard Veith (1856 - 1925) was a renowned Austrian artist who was active during the later part of the 19th and early 20th century. After having completed his studies as pupil of Laufberger at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, Veith continued studying in Paris. His specialties were large plafond (ceiling painting) and wall paintings, as well as frescoes with mythological and historical subject matters. His masterworks can be found in various famous buildings in Vienna and Prague. Veith was also a reputable and popular painter of female portraits.

Addendum: The dealer in Vienna pissed me off royally by sticking me with his PayPal fees as an additional charge then had the gall to send additional photographs of drawings by Veith in his inventory for a fixed price and again wanted me to pay his cost of doing business fees. I told him to stick it where the sun doesn't shine and that I would not be buying from him again unless it was really an exceptional work. Here are the additional drawings in his inventory:
